Words to Describe Things

Words to Describe ThingsWhat words do you use to describe something? Sometimes it is hard to come up with a description that is easy and compelling enough to capture someone's attention. The following is an analysis of the different words that are used to describe things and some tips on how to use them in your writing. When describing a thing or idea, it is often a hard task to write something that will interest others. People need a description to read your essay, so they may have a hard time with the description aspect. Here are some pointers on how to describe things, without sounding like you are reading your thesis off of the back of a cereal box.In general, try to use broad brush strokes when describing things. This allows you to describe the thing in a manner that is easily understood by people. The three basic categories of descriptive words are common, personal, and specific. A good rule of thumb is to begin your description with 'I' and end it with 'we'. That should be enou gh to get your point across to readers. Some common words include: I, me, my, us, we, us, our, yours, mine, and ours. You can also use a subcategory of common words that gets us to the part where we are going to start to describe the actual item. This is where we will get into specifics about the item.Personalizing your writing gives you the chance to place the word 'us' in front of your words, and allow readers to connect to your essay in a natural way. When a reader feels as though he or she knows you or your perspective, the more interested they will be in your writing. Make sure that the personalizing of your writing is accompanied by emotion, as words such as 'us' have the tendency to 'push' the reader to think about that they may be interested in a relationship with you.Specific is another category that you can use, as well as your own words. 'This is' is a great example of this. The two components that this word takes on are the 'this' part and the word itself. Many times, even though you do not want to use all the descriptive words in the category, your essay still has to say something. If you were to describe something without any emotion attached to it, it wouldn't have the appeal that it does when you have included the 'us' portion. Use descriptive words to grab people's attention and add emotional meaning to your writing. How you go about describing things to others can depend on the tone of your writing. We all want to convey the message we are trying to get across to other people in the best way possible. Always be mindful of the context of the information you are presenting and use descriptive words in a way that allows you to speak your mind.
